Relatives held over robbery of overseas-based Guyanese

Police investigators have arrested two relatives of an overseas based Guyanese man who was robbed just after his arrival in the country on Tuesday night.

The man, Ganesh Looknauth, was accosted by the bandits as he was about to shut the gate to his Unity, East Coast Demerara house. The armed men who had their faces partly hidden, demanded money and valuables.

Looknauth told investigators that just after arriving in Guyana, he picked up $3 million cash from a friend for a recent property transaction.

That money was grabbed by the bandits after the man pointed out to them that it was stashed in one of his suitcases. The bandits also made off with a quantity of U.S dollars and other valuables.

The man’s nephew and another relative were arrested the same night.

Investigators believe that someone in the man’s family might have been behind the robbery, since he made several stops after arriving in the country and the bandits appear to have known his exact time of arrival at home. The probe is ongoing
