Two of the border regions which continue to see COVID-19 cases will continue to have restrictions on movement of persons in the communities because of the concern of migrants crossing over from Brazil and Venezuela.

Some Region Nine Officials have been questioning the need for the restrictions to remain in place while the region appears to be in control of the spread of the pandemic in that region.

Health Minister Dr. Frank Anthony explained that while there is no lockdown in place in the two regions, it was important for the restrictions on movement to remain.

He said “we have had spikes in cases in Region Nine and we have been able to control that now and we want to keep monitoring it. And we believe that with the restriction we can keep those cases at a minimum and we have a similar thing in Region One and those are the two regions that we have identified because of the influx of migrants”.

There is the concern that the two regions which border Brazil and Venezuela might continue to see illegal migration from the two countries which both have a large number of coronavirus cases.

The Health Minister said in Region Four which has the largest number of COVID-19 cases in the country, there has been a noticeable spike in the Diamond community on the East Bank of Demerara.

The Ministry has launched a mobile testing team in the community.

The Health Minister said it is important for citizens to keep following the guidelines. He said the relaxing of the curfew measures should not be seen as an invitation for the guidelines to be flouted.
