Returning Guyanese robbed of suitcases, money and car just after arrival
A Guyanese couple who arrived in Guyana on Thursday morning from the United States along with the relative who picked them up from the airport were robbed at gunpoint just as they pulled in at the Pouderoyen house where they would spend their vacation.
US-based Guyanese Balram Singh and his wife Indira arrived at the Cheddi Jagan Airport just after 1 o’ clock on Thursday morning and were met at the airport by Balram’s brother, Rabindranauth Sukra.
The three left the airport for Sukra’s East Bank Demerara home just after 2am. When they arrived there at 3:10am, they were greeted by three armed gunmen at the gate to the yard.
They were dragged out of the motor car and robbed of all of their jewellery, their suitcases, over US$8000 in cash and the gold Toyota Spacio motor car which belongs to Sukra. The gunmen also escaped with all of their cellphones and travel documents and their social security cards and other important documents.
Speaking to News Source, Rabindranauth Sukra’s wife said the family is very traumatized by the welcome they got upon their arrival home. She said her brother-in-law and his wife arrived in Guyana to do charity work leading into the holiday season but with all of their belongings and money stolen, they just want to leave the country immediately.
“They are shocked and terrified and as soon as the clear up their documents and get new documents from the embassy, I believe they will leave on the next flight. This wasn’t a welcome for them or what anyone was expecting. As soon as they come in the country, first thing is robbery. That’s not good at all”, the woman told News Source.
The Guyana Police Force is probing the incident.
The family members believe someone at the airport may have leaked the address where the overseas visitors would be staying since they cannot figure out how the robbers would be waiting at the gate for their arrival.
