General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party and former Minister of Home Affairs, Clement Rohee has blasted the Presidential pardons of some non-violent young convicts and eleven women who are mothers.
President David Granger last week announced that he was pardoning eleven women prisoners who were serving time for non violent, non cocaine related and non human trafficking offences. The President said the women should be home with their families for the holidays.
But at his Monday morning press conference, Mr. Rohee said the Granger pardons are “haphazard” and the President is abusing the Presidential pardoning process.
Rohee said persons should be allowed to serve out their time and not just released from prison.
The President has made it clear that the pardons are not being done in a “whimsical” manner are based on advice from the Attorney General.
The Attorney General would usually consult with the Prison system and look for those prisoners who near to completing their time in prison and who would have been on good behaviour.
Rohee does not think that’s good enough and wants the President to make the criteria known to the public as to how a decision is arrived at when granting the pardons.
Former President under the PPP, Donald Ramotar pardoned a convicted child killer on the same day that he left office and said he thought the parents of the victim would have been over the murder by now.
