Rohee defends purchase of seaside land for $1.5M as “just an investment”

General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party, Clement Rohee has defended his purchase of prime sea side land for $1. 5 Million while he served as Minister under the last government.

Rohee who told the media that as a government Minister, his monthly salary was $579,000, said the land was offered to him and he bought it.

When asked whether he believes it was fair for him to be offered and purchase prime land for the same price that low and middle-income workers would pay when his salary was four times the salary they received, the former Government Minister said he is unaware of those facts.

“I can’t explain that because I don’t have those details that you are referring to about what is available where and how much it is for… I never made that type of investigation. If I am offered a piece of land for that amount of money, then I have to determine whether I can afford it and if I can afford it, how am I going to pay for it and such on”.

Asked whether he thought he had gotten a good deal with the land, Mr. Rohee said “call it a good deal or bad deal, it was just an investment on my part”.

The PPP Civic government had come under severe criticism for the development of the seaside community as an exclusive housing scheme for members of the administration and other senior officials. The land was sold for far less than it was worth and hundreds of millions of taxpayers dollars were used to develop the land.

Former President Bharrat Jagdeo has a sprawling mansion in the area as well as several other former government officials.
