Rohee plays dodge-ball on Jagdeo race statement

Minister of Home Affairs and Executive member of the governing People’s Progressive Party, Clement Rohee believes recent statements by Former President Bharrat Jagdeo that there is a “resurgence” of sentiments against Guyanese of East Indian descent must not be seen as a position of the Peoples Progressive Party although Jagdeo still holds a senior position in the party.

At a Monday morning press conference at Freedom House, Rohee reminded that when late President Janet Jagan had added her voice to an issue after she demitted the Office of President, it was made clear that she was doing so in her private capacity.

It was then President Bharrat Jagdeo who stated that Mrs. Jagan was now a private citizen and her thoughts should be seen as the thoughts of a private citizen.

The recent statement about sentiments against Guyanese of East Indian descent was made by Mr. Jagdeo at the funeral service of late PPP Stalwart Reepu Daman Persaud.

The former President sought to highlight the ongoing libel case he brought against columnist Freddie Kissoon and the Attorneys’ questioning of appointments under his watch as evidence that there was the resurgence of sentiments against East Indians in Guyana.

In that case, Kissoons attorneys have been examining the race of persons appointed to senior positions under Jagdeo.

Today Rohee said the PPP has not met to discuss the Jagdeo statement and the statement should be seen as one made at a private function and not on a party platform.

However, when reminded that it was the PPP Government that raised an issue over statements made by then Caricom Official Carl Greenidge at the funeral of a fallen political colleague, Rohee said the former President gave his opinion and like Mrs. Jagan, his opinion was that of a private citizen.

When asked about his own thoughts on the issue, the PPP Executive member declined to share those thoughts “at this time”.
