Royston King charged for writing off taxes for Beacon Foundation

Public Relations Officer of the Georgetown City Council, Royston King appeared in court on Monday afternoon and was charged for forgery after he allegedly granted a $36 million waiver in rates and taxes for the charity organisation, the Beacon Foundation.

King reportedly did the write off and signed documents as the Acting Town Clerk. The Police case is that he was not the acting Town Clerk at the time. He was granted $70,000 bail after the charge was read to him.

The 49-year-old who has worked at the Georgetown City Council for over a decade was not required to enter a plea to the charge. He will make his next court appearance on September 16, 2014.

His arrest and the subsequent charge are being seen as politically motivated. King has been in several tussles with the Government appointed acting Town Clerk Carol Sooba. At one time, King was appointed Acting Town Clerk by Mayor Hamilton Green and he moved to the court to challenge Sooba’s appointment by the Minister of Local Government.

The Opposition party, A Partnership for National Unity blasted the arrest of King and the charges. In a statement issued moments after King appeared in court, the APNU said it “stands in solidarity with Mr. Royston King, Public Relations Officer of the Mayor and City Council of Georgetown”

The party said it strongly condemns the harassment of Mr. King by agents of the People’s Progressive Party/Civic Administration and that the people of the city of Georgetown want and demand local government elections.

“APNU affirms that Georgetown needs elections and not politically motivated arrest and calls on the PPP/C administration to bring to an end this type of political harassment”, the statement concluded.
