Vice President, Bharrat Jagdeo has confirmed that monies have been set aside in the budget for salary increases for public servants this year, although he has not provided a figure.

He said that the announcement will be made later this year.

The Government last month increased the salaries of public servants by 8% across the board.

On Thursday, Opposition Leader Aubrey Norton complained that there were no salary adjustments for teachers and the wider public service.

But in an interview last evening the Vice President responded that the budget caters for increases.

“In the budget, we have budgeted for wages and salaries in 2023, just that the announcement will not be made not but it will but done until the end of the year,” Jagdeo said.

Mr. Jagdeo said public servants are better off under the current PPP government. He said that in the past three years, the employment cost has grown by $38 billion in the public service.

“We have budgeted $107B for employment cost in the public sector, $107B will go into people’s pocket out the $781B budget and if you compare 2014, the last year the PPP was in office to 2019, the last year they produce a budget, the employment cost in five years grew by $27B in that period, and in the first three years of the PPP, the employment cost has grown by $38B,” Mr. Jagdeo said.

The Vice President said while the government is committed to bettering the lives of public servants, it will not fall into the trap of going on massive spending even as he highlighted the importance of the public servants.
