Search launched for American tourist reported missing in Rupununi during fishing trip

Local law enforcement has launched a search for an American man who reportedly went missing on Tuesday during a fishing trip in the Rupununi river.

The missing man’s name has been given as Thomas Carstens Jr. He was last seen on Tuesday when he left a resort in the Rupununi region in the company of a boat captain and another man for the fishing trip.

Reports have since surfaced that he went missing when the boat capsized during the fishing trip.

The Guyana Tourism Authority has indicated that it learnt of the reports of the incident on Wednesday and has since issued a warning about tourists utilizing the services of unauthorized tour guides during visits.

The authority said a list of approved operators is published on the website of the Ministry of Tourism Industry and Commerce and on the Facebook page of the Guyana Tourism Authority.

“Tours which are unregulated and not approved by the Authority many times do not have the necessary safety systems and protocols in place”, the statement noted.

Three weeks ago, a US-based Guyanese man went missing at the Orinduik Falls during a visit with his girlfriend and a group of tourists. His body was found a few days later and the cause of death was listed as drowning.
