The race for the next Leader of the People’s National Congress is now in top gear as seven members of the party have been officially nominated for the position of Party Leader.

In a statement today, the People’s National Congress announced the nominations of Aubrey Norton, Richard Van West Charles, Sharma Solomon, Volda Lawrence, Joe Harmon, and Basil Williams for the position of Leader of the party.

Norton, Van West-Charles, and Harmon have already launched their campaigns.

In addition to the nominations for the position of Party Leader, the PNC also announced that sixteen persons have been nominated for the position of Chairman of the party.

Incumbent Chairman Volda Lawrence has also been nominated for the position.

The other nominees are Simona Broomes, Amanza Walton-Desir, Gary Best, Shurwayne Holder, Roysdale Forde, Annette Ferguson, Geeta Chandan, Mervyn Williams, Christopher Jones, Richard Van-West Charles, Aubrey Norton, Sharma Solomon, Dawn Hastings, Ronald Bulkan, and Joe Harmon.

Thirty persons were also nominated for the position of party Vice-Chairman and 18 nominations were received for party treasurer.

The party said it will now write to all the nominees for them to indicate whether they will accept or decline the nominations.

The PNC explained that since several persons were nominated to contest for more than one position, the elections will be conducted in two stages with the result for each stage being declared moving to the next stage.

The first stage includes the election of the Leader, Chairman, two Vice-Chairpersons and Treasurer and the second stage entails election of the members to the Central Executive Committee.

Declaring that it cannot move forward disunited, the party said the upcoming congress is important for its re-organization and re-position.

“As a consequence, its foremost duty at this Congress, as it has been at others, is to promote unity and cohesion. Indeed, the multiple candidates nominated to be elected to the various offices and the opening of this process to the Guyanese public demonstrates the confidence the PNCR has in its internal democratic systems. For us, it is an expression of the will of our members and supporters,” The party said in a statement today.

The PNCR’s 21st Biennial Delegates Congress will be held on December 11th and will be for delegates only, decentralized, and hybrid. It will be conducted over one day at Party Congress Houses and approved venues in the respective regions.
