Several city thoroughfares closed to heavy duty vehicles

The Georgetown Mayor and City Council has announced that it would be moving to close several city thoroughfares to heavy duty vehicles as it continues its road assessment exercise that began on Tuesday.

The Office of the Town Clerk said the assessment is expected to allow the municipality to go ahead with road works services which it was previously unable to conduct.

Industrial Site road and Water Street are the first two areas that are being addressed.

“The Industrial Site road is of particular concern to the council since it is almost impassable. One of the municipal daycare centres is located in that area and the deteriorated road is of great concern to persons who live there. The daycare is convenient to persons who work and live at Industrial Site,” a statement noted.

Additionally, sections of Water Street have also deteriorated to the point where vehicles are using single lanes because of poor conditions. The council said it sees this as an unnecessary threat to citizens and is eager to correct this issue.

Robb Street and Avenue of the Republic were also mentioned for service in a previous announcement regarding road works.

“As part of council’s impending budget review, management also finds it prudent to make the necessary road assessment for provision of this service,” the statement further noted.

The operators of heavy duty single axle vehicles, 16 wheelers and other such large vehicles are reminded that the identified roads are not accessible to them.

However, cars, vans and smaller vehicles are permitted.
