Joinder list Parliamentary representative and Leader of the Liberty and Justice Party, Lenox Shuman today offered his unwavering support for the $781.9B National Budget proposed by the Government.

The Opposition Member of the National Assembly said the budget sets the tone for 2023 to be an extremely great year for the people of Guyana.

He attacked the APNU+AFC Opposition Members over their contributions to the budget debate.

“I would have thought that a party that would have exhausted every single constitutional means to hold onto power would have educated themselves and read the Constitution to know what their obligations are as written in this book. And I will say, that I am so sadly disappointed. On Day One, our very first speaker, came into this House and started speaking about an apartheid state, inherent racism, racist policies and all of these things,” Shuman said.

Singling out APNU+AFC Parliamentarian, Dawn Hastings-Williams, who during her budget presentation, spoke about the 24-year legal battle regarding Indigenous Lands in Region Seven, the Deputy Speaker contended that the Coalition Government did everything within its powers to frustrate the same process.

Taking credit for the delivery of the ruling, the Deputy Speaker said it was because of his efforts and that of others in Government and Justice System, that the age-old dispute was brought to end.

“I am happy to say Mr Speaker is because of a constant dialogue between myself and the Attorney General and the Justice System, I don’t want to name the Officer…the people finally got the ruling, finally got the written ruling. It is with the support of the Attorney General. So, you cannot come to this podium and lament how great you were in office when you did absolutely nothing. You did everything to frustrate the process,” the Deputy Speaker said. 

The LJP MP told the House that while the APNU+AFC MPs have spoken about Government having its knees on the necks of Indigenous People, it is the very coalition that discriminated against him, while he served as the Vice Chairman of the National Toshaos’ Council (NTC), and sought to dictate the operations of the NTC.

Further, he accused of the APNU+AFC of stalling the process of issuing Land Titles while in Office.

According to him, instead of issuing land title, the coalition, revoked a Land Title from an Indigenous Village in Region 9.

Speaking to his contributions to the development of Indigenous People, the Joinder List party representative said it is because of his hard work and dedication, that indigenous people have greater access to education, including tertiary education.
