Sisters lose their homes in East La Penitence blaze

Two sisters who lived side by side, lost their homes this afternoon in a fire at Jackson Dam, East La Penitence.

The Fire Service was summoned just after 2:30 this afternoon after an alert was raised as the fire was spotted in one of the wooden houses.

One of the sisters Janel Clarke December said she was in her yard cleaning when one of her children raised an alarm that a bright light was seen in the other sister’s house.

The woman said the family tried at first to put out the blaze by themselves but their efforts failed and the fire quickly spread to her house.

“When we went to investigate, we saw a mattress on fire. We try putting it out but we didn’t have enough water. We call the Fire service and didn’t get them at first but someone went to get them. By the time they came, the entire house was on fire and the only thing left to do was to save the neighbour’s house”, Ms. December explained.

She said it is suspected that the fire was started by her 4-year-old nephew who was seen playing with a lighter in the room where the fire began.

The family lost all of their belongings in the blaze.

An investigation is underway.
