Six years in jail for boat captain busted with illegal guns and ammunition

A few days after nine men were arrested in boat with with AK-47 guns, ammunition and marijuana, the Captain of the boat appeared in Court on Friday and was sentenced to six years in jail after pleading guilty to illegal weapon and marijuana possession.

44-Year-Old, Dexter Valenzuela, stood before Chief Magistrate, Ann McLennan and pleaded guilty to two out of 5 offences.

The Court heard that on the 24th October the man was busted with 1.5 kilograms of marijuana along with two Ak 47 rifles and matching rounds.

The bust was made in the Barima River after the Police received information about the suspicious boats moving along the river.

During interrogation, the boat captain admitted that one of the guns belonged to him but he is unaware of the ownership of the other illegal items.

He was sentenced to three years in jail for the illegal gun charge and three years in jail for the illegal ammunition charge.
