Some workers at Aurora Gold Mines on sit-in action

More than sixty mine workers attached to the mines and mechanical divisions of the Aurora Gold Mines of Guyana Goldfields stayed away from their jobs this morning over concerns that they might not be paid severance packages as another company takes over the control of the mining operations and a number of other issues.

Many of the workers have said that they do not intend to return to work until they speak with a representative from the National Mine Workers Union.

They are also afraid of being victimized and have indicated that they will only speak to the media on the condition of anonymity.

One of the workers told News Source this morning that they had meetings with the mine manager, who appeared not aware of their concerns and issues related to their welfare.

“He is becoming upset with the issues we are raising and is saying that it is not his problem”, the worker explained.

The workers have been asked to resume duty as the union and management of the company make moves to address their concerns.

They are however afraid that their concerns might not be addressed with any haste if they were to return to work without any conditions being set.

According to the workers, initially, when they were informed of the mine operations changing control, they were told that they would all be paid severance packages by the Aurora company, but they claim that the company has now changed that position.

The Human Resources Manager at Guyana Goldfields, Peter Benny, told News Source that the workers are on a “stand down” action. He said it is a crew and not widespread.

He explained that the company will be issuing a press statement later today to highlight the issue and its position.
