State of New Amsterdam Prison facilitated escape; One escapee recaptured

As the Guyana Police Force continues its hunt for one of the two prisoners who escaped from the New Amsterdam jail on Wednesday night, the current state of the jailhouse is being blamed for contributing to poor security.

A prison officer who worked at the prison in the past and asked to remain anonymous, explained to News Source that several sections of the New Amsterdam prison are in disrepair.

The former prison guard said he is surprised that there has not been more attempts to escape. He pointed out that security cameras have not been installed in several key areas and in addition to that problem, many parts of the prison building has rotting wood and concrete walls that were poorly constructed.

The two prisoners were able to use bed sheets and lower their bodies down the back of the northern building without being noticed. The building appears old and falling apart.

The prisoners were only spotted by security cameras as they scaled the prison fence and made their dash for freedom.

One of the prisoners has since been recaptured. According to reports, Ravindra Samaroo aka “Ravi” was arrested by police after he was found hiding on Thursday in a clump of bushes. The other escapee, Lennox Patterson, aka “Gold Teeth” is still on the run.

The two were remanded to prison for a recent robbery under arms in the Berbice area.
