“I am looking at the implications and the decision I have to make,” he said briefly on the sidelines of an event, noting that he was provided with a written copy of the opinion recently and it remains “quite clear” that among everything the Chief Justice has written, she has not interfered with the President’s right to select a person that is fit and proper.

Still no decision on latest GECOM nomination list -Pres. Granger

President David Granger on Wednesday said he is still studying the last list of nominees submitted by Leader of the Opposition Bharrat Jagdeo for the Chairmanship of the Guyana Elections Commission.

The list was submitted to the President just over a month ago.

It was the third list submitted by the Opposition Leader. The two previous lists were both rejected.

This morning, President Granger told journalists at State House that he intends to meet with Mr. Jagdeo next week to discuss the way forward.

He said while he is studying the list, which Mr. Jagdeo himself took almost two months to submit, he is also studying the published opinion of the Chief Justice Roxanne George in the matter.

In this regard, the President said he intends to do just that. “I was awaiting the Chief Justice’s written judgment because I wanted to be doubly sure that I didn’t misinterpret what she said. Now that I have it in hand, in days I will have a meeting with Mr. Jagdeo.”

The President said he is not sure of the Opposition Leader’s availability, but he hopes that the meeting could take place sometime next week.
