Hours after the government announced an ease in the curfew hours and plans to reopen the country’s international airports, Prime Minister Mark Phillips warned that the relaxing of some of the measures does not allow for persons to ignore the other measures.

“If you want to stay alive, now is the time to stop partying and time to start wearing your mask”, Prime Minister Phillips advised.

At an afternoon press conference, the Prime Minister who is heading the National COVID-19 Task Force said “COVID-19 is a killer” and citizens must follow the guidelines including the wearing of face masks to save their own lives.

“By adhering to the measures you will save your own lives and the people you interact with”, the Prime Minister said.

It is mandatory for persons to wear a face mask once in the outdoors in Guyana, however, some citizens have been ignoring the guidelines.

Prime Minister Phillips said if they care about their lives and those in their home, they need to “start by wearing a mask and if you don’t have to leave your home, do not leave your home”.

Guyana currently has more than 1100 active cases of COVID-19. September has been the deadliest month for the pandemic in Guyana, with 41 lives lost in 30 days.

The Prime Minister said despite public perception, the PPP government is committed to tackling the pandemic. He said from the time the PPP took office, it has put a number of policies in place to fight COVID-19.

The government has come under heavy criticism from the Opposition over its COVID-19 response. The APNU+AFC has accused the government of dismantling many of the systems that it left in place and the coalition believes that has resulted in more spread of the disease and the spike in deaths.

Health Minister Dr. Frank Anthony today also joined the calls for citizens to follow the guidelines. He said many of the nation’s elderly citizens remain at high risk and are the most affected by deaths.
