The Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union has announced that the nearly 3500 sugar workers who work in the fields and factories of the Albion, Blairmont and Uitvlugt are looking for a salary increase from President David Granger.

The workers have submitted a petition to the President calling on him and his government to approve a salary increase for them.

According to GAWU, many of the workers have been working for the same rates-of-pay since 2015 though the cost-of-living has risen.

In the petition, the workers also complained that their earnings have declined as a result of the closure of some estates, while some benefits are no longer being offered to them.

The workers are of the view that the Government as the owner of the industry, had a responsibility to ensure that they benefit from adequate compensation to maintain their standard.

The workers expressed to the President their believe that he should use his office to have the GuySuCo approve an appropriate rise in pay at their upcoming negotiations with GAWU.

The workers in the GAWU statement said they are eagerly looking forward to hearing from the President regarding their petition.

The Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union has indicated that it is also hopeful that the President will consider the cries of the workers for increased salaries.
