Surinamese Police have arrested a suspect in the deadly pirate attack on fishermen on Surinamese waters. The bodies of some of the fishermen have since been recovered, several others remain missing.

The sixteen Guyanese fishermen were reported missing last week following the attack that saw about twenty of them being forced to jump overboard. Those who survived spoke about the harrowing ordeal of being beaten and abandoned at sea by the pirates, who they believe are also Guyanese nationals.

This afternoon, several relatives of the missing fishermen gathered at a facility where the suspect was being held. They shouted at him as Police quickly whisked him off from the scene.

“Don’t hide he face”, they shouted, as they pushed forward and removed a t-shirt that had been pulled over the man’s face.

“He is a killer”, others shouted.

Investigators in Suriname have provided the names of the suspects to Guyanese Police in the Berbice area and the two countries are working together on the investigation.

The Police suspect that the pirates may have made their way to the Berbice region after carrying out their deadly attack.

And there are reports in Suriname today that another pirate attack took place last evening in the country’s waters. The nationality of the victims of the latest attack is not known and it is suspected that at least one man has been killed by pirates.
