A 60-year-old gold miner who is originally from Turkeyen on the East Coast of Demerara is expected to be medevac to the city today from Region 8 after exhibiting symptoms of the coronavirus.

According to information from the Police Commander in the area, at around 11:40 last evening, the miner turned up at the Mahdia Public Hospital and reported feeling unwell.

He was seen and examined by the Doctor on duty who admitted him as a suspected case for the coronavirus. The Doctor made that decision because the man was coughing continuously and also had difficulty breathing.

The Health Authorities in Georgetown were contacted and systems are being put in place to fly the ailing man out from the area via medevac today.

The miner operates a mining site at North Fork Backdam in the Kanawaruk community in Region 8.

Testing for the coronavirus in Guyana is only being done by the National Reference Laboratory at the Georgetown Hospital.

Since the facility started testing just over a month ago, 115 persons were tested for the coronavirus with 31 of those tests coming back positive. The country has recorded five deaths from the coronavirus.
