Task Force completes report on security at CJIA following break-in of private jet

A report on the security system at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) has been handed over to the Minister of Public Works, Juan Edghill, the airport’s management said in a statement.

It contains an assessment of the existing security system as well as recommendations.

The report follows a major breach in airport security last month after a resident of Timehri dug his way onto the tarmac of the airport and broke into a private jet undetected.

In receiving the report on Monday, Minister Edghill said it contains an evaluation of the airport’s security operations with the sole intention of improving the existing systems.

“The final report will be presented to cabinet for review and immediate action,” he was quoted as saying.

The report was prepared by the Airport Security Taskforce, which included representatives from the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority, Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Customs, Immigration, Guyana Police Force, Customs Anti- Narcotics Unit, Guyana Defence Force and Guyana Fire Service.

Meanwhile, the Timehri resident, Albert Rajram, who had stolen $2.1M in electronic gadgets, alcohol and other valuable items, was sentenced to three years in prison earlier this month.

The issue had raised serious questions about security and safety at the airport.
