Teenage “car thief” escapes custody

A 16-year-old lad who pleaded guilty earlier this week to stealing a car and was remanded has escaped police custody. The juvenile was back at court on Friday for a probation report before sentencing but was told to return to court on the 27th April for sentencing.

Police sources say the young man escaped from the lock ups at the Magistrates’ Court and was able to sneak past law men without being noticed.

Reports indicate that it was not until, prisoners were being transported to the Camp Street jail late Friday that it was noticed that the young man had made good his escape. An investigation has been launched into the escape.

The 16-year-old was charged on April 9 after he was busted with the stolen car at Republic Park on the East Bank of Demerara. The car was stolen from a Guyana Defence Force Major who told police that he left the car engine on as he ran into an ATM facility on Camp Street to withdraw money. He said when he came out minutes later, the car was gone.

Following reports of the stolen car on the radio and the social networks, the young man and the car were spotted and he was accosted and handed over to police. The magistrate had ordered a probation report before handing down the sentence.
