Three Air traffic controllers sent on leave pending CJIA investigation

The Guyana Civil Aviation Authority has indicated that three persons attached to the Air Traffic Control department at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport have been sent on leave pending the outcome of the investigation into the Saturday morning incident at the airport when an air traffic controller left the post unmanned even as a Caribbean Airlines flight was approaching.

According to the GCCA, an investigation is being conducted by senior personnel of the body and the final report is expected to be handed over to the Minister of Transport by the end of this week.

“It should be noted that the inbound Caribbean Airlines flight to the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) was in continuous contact and in the control of the Area Control Centre which provided a replacement Air Traffic Controller to ensure the safe landing of the aircraft”, the GCAA said.

Reports from the Cheddi Jagan International Airport stated that the Air Traffic Controller vacated his post after his shift ended and his replacement was not on site. The man was reportedly ill. His decision forced the approaching Caribbean Airlines flight to abort its initial approach and circle the airport several times before eventually touching down safely under the guidance of the the replacement officer.
