Three Bar owners at Giftland’s Strip to face charges for breaching COVID Regulations

The Guyana Police Force announced this morning that it was forced to arrest the owners of three bars located at the Giftland Mall Entertainment strip over the weekend for breaches of the COVID-19 regulations.

The three were released on station bail, but are expected to face charges in Court tomorrow.

The Guyana Police Force reminded that the COVID-19 regulations allow for bars to be open with 40% capacity up to 9:30pm.

The Force said it begins its enforcement after 9:30 pm. This past Saturday ranks visited the Giftland Mall Entertainment strip and found the bars operating after 10 pm. The bars were immediately closed down and the owners arrested.

The Police said the night before, the same owners were warned about operating beyond the allowed hour.

The Police Force rejected claims by the Giftland Mall owner, Roy Beepat, that the mall is being targeted for enforcement of the COVID regulations.

The Force said it has never sought to force the closure of the entertainment spots before the gazetted time for closure.
