Three Berbice men remanded for murder of Henry cousins

Three men from Berbice were today charged and remanded to jail for the murders of teen cousins, Isaiah and Joel Henry in the Cotton Tree Backdam, West Coast Berbice.

The three, 34-year-old Anil Sancharra, 30-year-old Vinod Gopaul and 34-year-old, Akash Singh appeared before Magistrate Peter Hugh this afternoon and were not required to enter a plea to the indictable murder charge.

Sancharra and Gopaul were charged jointly for the murders of Isaiah and Joel Henry while Akash Singh was charged separately for the same double murder.

The men were unrepresented as they appeared before the Magistrate who after reading out the charges remanded the three to jail until February when they will appear in the Blairmont area.

The three men were brought to the Court early this morning but later taken away to the CID headquarters and eventually brought back to Court.

Two of the men repeatedly declared their innocence claiming that they had nothing to do with the double murder.

The Guyana Police Force has not revealed the evidence against the three men as yet but it was the Director of Public Prosecutions who after going through the Police file, recommended the charges.

Family members of the dead teens have said that they hope the Police charges are based on evidence and not just confessions.

Isaiah and Joel Henry

The teenage cousins, Isaiah and Joel Henry, were found murdered in the Cotton Tree Backdam, West Coast Berbice one day after they went to pick coconuts in the #3 Village backdam.

Their bodies were found mutilated and with multiple chop wounds including slashes to their necks and backs.

The bodies also appeared to have been moved from the scene of the crime and placed in another area where they were eventually discovered.

The double murder led to days of protest action on the West Coast of Berbice as family members and villagers demanded justice.

Just recently, family members picketed the Criminal Investigations Department over the lack of updated information on the investigations.

The Guyana Police Force has been receiving assistance with its investigations from the Regional Security System and the US Federal Bureau of Investigations.
