Three new Senior Counsel receive instruments of appointment

Less than 30 minutes after losing a case against the appointment of Senior Counsel by former President David Granger, Attorney Timothy Jonas joined Attorney General Anil Nandlall and Attorney Jameela Ali to be appointed as Senior Counsel by President Irfaan Ali.

The Office of the President announced the appointments back in October but a decision was taken to await the outcome of the case filed by Jonas in the High Court. The case was thrown out today, as a High Court Judge ruled that it had no merit.

Jonas was challenging the power of the President to appoint Senior Counsel and while 17 senior Counsel were appointed by former President Granger, Jonas’ lawsuit focused on the last four who were appointed back in 2019.

Following his appointment today, the new member of the inner bar said the case that he took to the Court brought out the need for more transparency in the appointment of Senior Counsel.

Guyana had not seen the appointment of Senior Counsel for more than two decades before Mr. Granger restarted the appointments when he became President.
