Three Stabroek Market Vendors remanded for $22 Million L. Seepersaud and Sons Jewellery Heist

Three vendors of the Stabroek Market have been slapped with charges in connection with the multi million dollar heist that took place last weekend at the L. Seepersaud Maraj and Sons Jewellery Store,  which is located in the same market.

This morning at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, 31-year-old, Tyron Parks, 60-year-old, Clifford Rodney and 58-year-old, Albert Defreitas, appeared before the Chief Magistrate and were not required to enter a plea to the charges related to the heist.

The Court heard that between the 2nd and 3rd July at Stabroek Market, the three vendors broke into the L. Seeperaud Maraj and Sons Jewellery Store and stole $20 million worth of Gold and Diamond jewellery along with $2 million cash.

The Police Prosecutor objected to bail based on the fact that all three of the accused have pending matters before the Court. The three men reportedly confessed to the heist during questioning by investigators, who laid out the evidence against them.

The Attorneys representing the three men asked the Court to grant bail, claiming that the men were tortured and forced to offer confessions. They did not provide any medical report or evidence pointing to the men being tortured.

The Magistrate refused bail and remanded all three men to jail.

The L. Seepersaud Maraj and Sons Jewellery Store has been in the Stabroek Marker for four decades. Following the heist over the CARICOM holiday weekend, concern was raised about the security of the market.

The matter will come up again in Court later this month.
