Top Cop issues stern warning against drunk driving and road lawlessness

Police Commissioner Leslie James today said the Guyana Police Force intends to further crack down on the lawlessness on the country’s roadways.

Guyana has recorded over 110 deaths on the roads so far for this year.

Speaking at the Police Force’s Annual Award Ceremony this morning, Commissioner James said there has been a spike in fatal accidents in the country and it is worrying.

“I would like to take the opportunity here to urge the motorists and the pedestrians to, especially at this point in time, when there is this urge to imbibe excessively, to be careful on the road. If you have to drink, do not drive. Get a designated driver. Call a taxi. And I am also speaking to members of the Force and Members of the Joint Services, look at ourselves and take a different approach”, he said.

In the past week alone, the country recorded six road deaths, with five of them being persons below the age of 30.

The Commissioner also warned persons against leaving the scene of an accident that they might have been involved in, pointing out that the Force is taking a serious position against that.

The Top Cop said the Force will be addressing the road traffic problems seriously, with increased presence of Traffic and other ranks on the roadways especially during this time of the year.

At today’s award ceremony, Sergent Keith Conway of the Criminal Investigations Department, was adjudged the Best Cop. He was involved in solving a number of high profile crimes this year.
