Town Clerk confident Cabinet will support return of parking meter project

Days after a presentation to the Cabinet on the proposed return of paid parking in Georgetown, Town Clerk Royston King today said he is “very optimistic” that the project will move forward.

Mr. King told reporters this afternoon that he is not at liberty to discuss the details of the meeting and presentation, but he felt the Cabinet is sympathetic to the challenges being faced by the Council.

The Town Clerk said questions were asked by Members of Cabinet with specific concerns, but he explained that the Council now awaits the process and Cabinet’s determination.

He said Cabinet members requested additional documents from the Council, including the feasibility study, which has been submitted.

“We were given an opportunity to make a presentation and we are happy… Cabinet now needs time to study and make a determination and we are given them that time,” King added.

King appears convinced that the Council will get the green light to move ahead with the project, commenting that “when we receive the fiat of the government we will roll out a project that meets the satisfaction of all.”

According to the Town Clerk, the Council is also happy that the concessionaire, Smart City Solutions, has been very patient since the project was suspended last year.

The original contract was suspended by the Government following concerns and almost daily protests by citizens. City Hall was tasked with reviewing the contract.

At an April 4th meeting, the Council approved the amended parking meter by-laws by majority vote.
