Tremor rattles Guyana as Earthquake shakes Venezuela

Just around 10:15 on Friday night, several areas across Guyana experienced an earth tremor that lasted for just over 2 minutes. In the nation’s capital  of Georgetown, scores of persons experienced heavy shaking of their homes.

Many of them turned to Facebook and Twitter to report their experience.

One Man in Lamaha Gardens said the tremor was so violent in his area that car alarms and home alarms all “went off”. Persons as far as Linden which is located close to 70 miles from Georgetown felt the effects of the tremor. Windows and doors rattled against each other as several persons ran out of their homes.

One Linden woman said she was in the bath at the time of the tremor and almost ran naked out of the house when she felt its effects. She said she was scared and in disbelief.

Reports also came in from Corentyne in Berbice and a number of  Essequibo villages about the tremor being felt in those communities. Across the Caribbean, persons in nearby Trinidad and Tobago and Grenada also reported feeling the tremors.

The United States Geological survey reported that “an earthquake with magnitude 6.0 occurred near Guiria, Venezuela at 10:30 pm on Oct 12, 2013. The centre warned Venezuelans to be careful traversing the roadways in the aftermath of the earthquake since there could be several aftershocks throughout the night.
