Trump’s Immigration Policies will have impact on all of our lives -says Director of Guyana Foreign Service Institute

As U.S President Donald Trump appears to moving ahead with a strict immigration policy, the Director of Guyana’s Foreign Service Institute, Ambassador Ronald Austin is convinced that Mr. Trump’s immigration decisions, “will have an immediate impact on our lives.”

Speaking at a briefing session with staff members of the Foreign Service Institute, Ambassador Austin said “We have to, I think first of all, in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and I think throughout the Government of Guyana, decide how we respond to the emergence of President Trump and the consequences of his policies”.

Days after being sworn into office, President Trump issued an executive order banning citizens of seven muslim majority countries from entering the United States.

The “temporary ban” was short lived following a move to the Court by a number of U.S States.  Mr. Trump has now vowed to toughen existing immigration laws. Already, there have been raids in a number of communities across the U.S seeking out illegal immigrants and suspected illegal immigrants who may have a criminal record.  At least one Guyanese national was rounded up in the raid along with several other CARICOM nationals.

Ambassador Austin does not believe that the policies being put in place by Trump should be taken for granted and he told the Foreign Service Officers that, “This is not abstract foreign policy, this is direct consequences of a man who has decided to change the way the United States sees the world, and in particular as far as the immigrant population is concerned in the United States.”

US President Trump is likely to sign a new immigration executive order on Wednesday, a day after addressing lawmakers at a joint session of Congress.

Staff members of the Foreign Service Institute were today debriefed on the possible effects of the immigration policies of the current United States administration by Vice Chancellor and Principal of the University of Guyana, Professor Ivelaw Griffith.

He made a presentation on “The emerging Trump Administration Foreign Policy and dynamics related to Guyana and the Caribbean”.

The presentation was facilitated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
