Two bodies recovered, Two others missing in Berbice River accident

Four men have died after their boat was involved in an accident last evening in the Berbice River with another boat that was suspected of transporting marijuana at the time.

The impact pitched occupants of the two boats into the river. The accident occurred close to 7pm in the vicinity of Friendship Village, Berbice.

According to a Police report, the two boats were heading in the opposite direction when the tragedy occurred.

The man who was the captain of the boat with marijuana has since been arrested along with three other men who were in his boat. His name has been given as Marvin Kissoon.

The Police report said he explained that the crash pitched him and the occupants of his boat as well as the occupants of the other boat into the river. Kissoon and the occupants from his boat all surfaced and sped away from the scene as the other four men from the other boat could not be found.

He was arrested this morning and based on information he provided, the Police traveled to three Berbice communities where they arrested three of the other men who were in Kissoon’s boat.

The four were nabbed with more than 70 pounds of marijuana that the police believe was being transported along the river at the time of the crash.

Late this afternoon, two of the bodies of four of the other men who were pitched into the river were found.

The two bodies have since been transported to a mortuary in the Berbice area as a search continues for the other two men who went overboard.

A full investigation has been launched.
