Two charged for cocaine in fish bust

A West Coast Demerara man and woman were on Monday morning arraigned in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court following last Wednesday’s seizure of cocaine in a cargo shipment of frozen fish at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri.

27-year-old Safoor Ali and 22-year-old Nazeema Inraze, who are said to be relatives, appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLenan but were not required to plea to the charge.

They were charged for attempting to traffic 20 pounds of cocaine in frozen fish through the CJIA on Wednesday June 8.

Ten persons were initially arrested for the bust in the cargo destined to be shipped to the United States of America.

After several days of investigation by members of the Police Narcotics Branch, eight persons were released and the two were brought before the court.

They were remanded until July 7.

The bust comes as the Guyana Police Force is intensifying its efforts to clamp down on the scourge of drug trafficking.
