Two men who have been fingered in the recruitment of persons to traffic cocaine out of Guyana appeared in Court today and were remanded to prison.

The arrests and charges come at a time when the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit appears to be widening its net in the fight against drug trafficking by going after the suppliers, traffickers and now the recruiters.

The two men, Mark Sauers aka “Redman” or “Marco”and Rolston Bacchus called “Randy”, “Troy”, “Muslim” and “Biggs”, were jointly charged for recruiting Safraz Jalaladeen to traffic over 12 pounds of cocaine out of Guyana between April 1, 2016 and May 19, 2016.

Jalaladeen was recently charged and sentenced to three years in jail after pleading guilty. He was busted three weeks ago with cocaine in milk powder packets at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport.

The Prosecution’s case is that Sauers and Bacchus sought out and hired Jalaladeen to ferry the cocaine out of the country. He was promised payments.

Additionally, Rolston Bacchus was slapped with another drug recruitment charge dating  back to 2015.

According to the CANU, between July and November, 2015, Bacchus procured Kathleen DeFlorimonte and Odessa Pollard to traffic cocaine out of Guyana.

Pollard was busted with over 25 pounds of cocaine at the Cheddi Jagan Airport and reportedly fingered her mother-in-law, Kathleen DeFlorimonte as the person who packed her suitcase.  Their trial is still ongoing.

During Friday’s appearance by the two alleged cocaine mule recruiters, the Prosecutor objected to bail on the grounds that the men were being sought out for a while but had only recently been arrested.  She also told the Magistrate that CANU is ready to go to trial at the earliest possible time.

The Magistrate refused bail to the two men and assigned the case to another Magistrate, who will begin hearing the matters later this month.
