Two Dead, Two missing in Berbice River Tragedy

The bodies of two persons have been found following a tragedy in the Upper Berbice river that has left investigators baffled.

Late Tuesday night, the body of a mid age man was taken to the New Amsterdam Hospital after it was found floating in the river in a farming community known as Mara.

Mara is located about 30 miles up river from the town of New Amsterdam.

The discovery on Tuesday triggered a search in the Upper Berbice river today. A police team late this afternoon discovered another body.

The two bodies discovered have been identified as 49-year-old Rudolph Sheriff of Smythfield, New Amsterdam and 14-year-old Shaquille Anthony Plass of Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam. Two other persons have been reported missing.

There are conflicting reports coming out of Berbice as to what could have possibly taken place out on the river. A Police source said from early reports it appears as though the 4 persons were travelling in the boat but they have reports that the boat was found without any major damage.
