Two die in East Coast Highway motorcycle crash

2016 is set to become the deadliest year on the country’s roadways and two more persons were added to the road fatality list on Sunday night.

A planned trip to the seawalls for a group of motorcyclists turned deadly when one of them slammed into a suspected drunk pedestrian. Both of them died on the spot.

The accident took place just outside the Yokohomo Car dealership at Plantation Sophia on the Rupert Craig East Coast highway.

The dead motorcyclist has been identified as 25-year-old Frank DeFlorimonte Jr. of Plaisance, East Coast Demerara.  The other dead man has only been identified only as a resident of Barr Street, Kitty.

Persons on the scene said DeFlorimonte was among a group of motorcyclists heading west along the East Coast roadway when tragedy struck.

He was at the back of the motorcycle riding pack when the pedestrian, attempted to cross the roadway and the motorcyclist collided with him, pitching them both into the air.

Relatives of the motorcyclist arrived on the scene and some cried uncontrollably.

The father of the dead man said he had repeatedly warned his son about speeding but he would usually dismiss the warnings and told him it was just part of having fun.

The two lifeless bodies were sprawled on the roadway for several minutes before an ambulance was summoned.  Both men were declared dead.

An investigation has been launched.
