Two Former PPP Members of Parliament take on new role as Commissioners at GECOM

Former People’s Progressive Party (PPP) Members of Parliament (MP) and Ministers, Robeson Benn and Bibi Shadick were sworn in as Commissioners of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) by President David Granger on Tuesday morning at the Ministry of the Presidency.

The President said he was happy to comply with the nominations as put forward by Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo so that the Elections Commission is brought back up to strength and is duly capably of discharging its responsibilities.

Benn and Shadick were nominated following the resignation of Commissioners Mahamood Shaw and Athmaram Mangar.

“Elections in Guyana are now on stable footing and I want to congratulate the
Chairman, Chief Elections Officer and members of Commission,” Mr. Granger said.

He said too that he was very impressed with the fact that in other CARICOM countries elections results were announced before mid night on E Day and expressed the confidence that Guyana will overcome its challenge in that regard.

Mr. Granger called on the newly sworn in Commissioners to ensure that future elections in Guyana are nothing short of “credible.”

The appointment of Benn and Shadick is particularly important as Guyana prepares for the holding of long overdcue Local Government Elections in coming months.

Benn and Shadick will now join Attorney and PPP nominated member Sase Gunraj on the Commission along with APNU nominated members Vincent Alexander, Sandra Jones and Charles Corbin.
