Two granted $200,000 bail each over attempt to bribe policeman

Two Sophia residents were today placed on $200,000 bail each at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court after they were both charged with attempting to bribe a policeman.

The two men, Kamendra Raghubeer and Anil Persaud, both appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan and entered not guilty pleas.

The court heard that on May 9th, at the Brickdam Police station, they corruptly gave a Police Constable $500,000 in cash for him to release Kamendra Raghubeer’s son, Micheal Raghubeer, who was in custody on an illegal firearm charge.

In Court today, Attorney Glen Hannoman, who is representing Raghubeer, told the court that the entire case represents a series of misconception. He claimed that his client did not know the procedures of the Court and thought he was handing over the money as station bail.

The two men were eventually granted bail in the sum of $200,000 each and will return to Court later in the month.

As a condition of the bail,  they are to report to the Brickdam Police Station every Friday.
