The Lusignan Prison is located on the East Coast of Demerara and usually houses inmates who are serving time for less serious offenses.

The two escapees have been identified as 26-year-old Sayouse Shakir, who was serving a 2 year sentence for break and entry and larceny and 23-year-old Rajindra Deonarine who was serving a 3 year jail sentence for possession of cocaine.
