The Guyana Police Force and the Guyana Prison Service have launched a massive search for two prisoners who escaped from the Lusignan Prison on Monday morning while labouring at the prison farm.
The Lusignan Prison is located on the East Coast of Demerara and usually houses inmates who are serving time for less serious offenses.
The two escapees have been identified as 26-year-old Sayouse Shakir, who was serving a 2 year sentence for break and entry and larceny and 23-year-old Rajindra Deonarine who was serving a 3 year jail sentence for possession of cocaine.
Director of Prisons, Carl Graham, told News Source that the two men would usually assist with farming work at the prison and it was just after 10:30 on Monday morning that they bolted from the prison. He said searches were immediately started once it was realized that the men had escaped.
Deonarine is from the Essequibo Coast area while Shakir is from the East Coast of Demerara area. Law enforcement agents are said to be checking both communities this evening and police stations across the country have been notified.
