Two more Corentyne residents die from COVID-19

The COVID-19 death toll in Guyana climbed to 1,042 today as the Ministry of Health announced the passing of two residents from the East-Berbice Corentyne area.

The two have been identified as a 45-year-old man and an 87-year-old woman, who were both unvaccinated.

In the past week alone, the East Berbice Corentyne area has seen a sudden increase in COVID-19 deaths. More than 7 deaths have been recorded in the Region Six area in the past seven days.

The Ministry of Health also reported today that there are currently 706 active cases of the virus in Guyana. 32 new cases have been recorded in the past 24 hours and a total of five persons are in the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit.

With the Omicron variant of the virus spreading globally, a number of Caribbean countries have reported their first cases of the new variant. Guyana has not recorded any new case of the variant, but it is unclear whether any samples have been sent for overseas testing to ascertain the presence of the Omicron variant.

The Minister of Health said citizens need to follow precautions and those who are not vaccinated need to get vaccinated.

Over the holiday weekend, the National COVID-19 Task Force plans to be out in full to clamp down on parties and large public gatherings.
