The death toll from the coronavirus in Guyana continues to climb with two more deaths being recorded on Saturday.

The two latest deaths have taken the total death toll to 76 with 35 of those deaths taking place in the last 26 days of September.

According to the Health Ministry, the two latest fatalities were both men below the age of 50.

One of the victims is a 36-year-old Region Six resident while the other man was 45-years-old and lived in Region. There were no other details provided on the deaths.

There are calls for the Ministry of Health to provide more details on the sudden spike in COVID-19 related deaths.

In the first four months of the pandemic (March to July), Guyana recorded a total of 20 COVID-19 related deaths. Between August 1 and September 26, that death toll climbed by 56.

In an interview last week, the Health Minister Dr. Frank Anthony contributed the increase in the number of deaths to an increase in the number of persons with underlying conditions contracting the virus.

He said almost all of those who died had underlying conditions.

Guyana currently has 1,104 active cases of COVID-19 with 872 of those active cases in home isolation.
