Two Prison Officers to face possible charges for smuggling of contraband

Two prison officers who were working the night shift are likely to be charged over an attempt to smugle more than 350 grams of marijuana into the Lusignan Prison.

In a statement on Saturday, the Prison Director (ag), Gladwin Samuels, explained that on Thursday August 28, a prison officer reported for duty at the Lusignan Prison just after 8pm with a quantity of marijuana and cigarettes in his possession.

Prison Authorities became aware of the contraband items in the jailhouse and started a probe.

Another rank who was in charge of manning the gate to the facility, alerted the other rank who brought the items in, and opened the gate to allow him to take them back out.

The two were confronted and according to the Prison Service, immediately admitted their roles in the smuggling of the items and tendered their resignations.

The Prison Service called in the Police to launch an investigation. The two were questioned and are likely to face charges soon.
