UG Law students get Hugh Wooding placements

The top 25 Guyanese Law graduates from the University of Guyana have been guaranteed placement at the Hugh Wooding Law School for the upcoming academic year. The Government of Guyana has announced the decision of the Council for Legal Education.

Earlier this year, the Council had said that it could not guarantee places for the Guyanese students at the Trinidad based Hugh Wooding Law School. However, the Government of Guyana and CARICOM wrote the Council of Legal Education expressing concern over that decision. The University of Guyana Law Society has also been raising concerns of its own with the Hugh Wooding Law School and the CLE.

As part of a previous agreement between UWI’s Council for Legal Education and UG, every year, 25 automatic placements were offered by the Council for Legal Education to UG for entry into Hugh Wooding. But the Government of Guyana has not been financially supporting the Hugh Wooding Law School and that may have been an issue.

Guyana’s Attorney General Anil Nandall recently said “Government considers this as a matter of priority because it puts in jeopardy the life and welfare of a number of students who would be completing the LLB programme at the University of Guyana in the year 2014, and as well, it jeopardises the entire law programme at the university and it jeopardises the future of students who are already in the programme and those students who are desirous of entering the programme.”

He noted that Government is always committed to ensuring its people, especially young people have access to education as it sees education as a vital tool to combat poverty and to advance citizens’ development.
