UG starts registration with new fees in place

The University of Guyana has started registration for the new academic year and has put in place the new tuition fees which were approved recently by the University council.

On Tuesday, students at the Turkeyen Campus noted several posters and notices about the new fees across the campus.

According to the University, new Guyanese students will now have to pay $210,000, inclusive of the Facilities Fee for most programmes. The previous fee was $127,000.

Continuing Guyanese students will pay an incremental increase beginning with $130,000 in 2014, $145,000 in 2015 and $160,000 in 2016, in addition to the $50,000 Facilities Fee, which replaces the various miscellaneous fees, previously paid.

The University has gone ahead with the increases even as the Government is to fully study the move. President Ramotar on Sunday said the issue has not reached cabinet and has not been fully discussed by the cabinet.

Meanwhile a number of students at the Turkeyen Campus have criticised the University of Guyana Student Society for agreeing to the increases before holding dialogue with students.
