UN Secretary General special representative on border controversy is in Guyana

The UN Secretary General’s personal representative in the UN Good Officer’s process on the Guyana Venezuela border controversy is in Guyana and met with President David Granger and a high level government team last evening.

The visiting UN official,Ambassador Dag Nylander, is here with a high level team of his own as he examines the issues related to the border controversy.

Other members of the high-level delegation were Mr. Guillermo Kendall of the UN Department of Political Affairs, Mr. David Hutchinson from the UN Office of Legal Affairs and Mr. Juan Jeannet-Acre from the Policy and Mediation Division in the Department of Political Affairs.  They were accompanied by acting UN Resident Coordinator and the Joint UN Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) Country Director, Mr. Martin Odiit.

The UN Secretary General is giving the good officer’s process one more try and if issues related to the controversy are not settled by year end, the international court will be the next stop for a juridical settlement.

Guyana has been pushing for a juridical settlement to the century’s old controversy. The only way that the UN will not push for a move to the international court is if both Guyana and Venezuela request a delay.

The UN official is also expected to visit venezuela. Guyana has been rallying the international community in its corner as venezuela continues to make claims to Guyana’s territory. Guyana maintains that there is no dispute and the issue was settled since 1899.
