The United Nations Secretary General, Ban-Ki-Moon has given the undertaking to send a team of UN officials to Guyana as President David Granger has made known the Guyana government’s concern over recent threats from Venezuela through its latest decree claiming Guyanese territory.

The UN Secretary General and President Granger held bilateral discussions this morning at the CARICOM Heads of Government Meeting in Barbados.

After the meeting, President Granger explained to News Source that he made it clear to the UN Secretary General that the Venezuelan threat is no longer a Guyana issue, but it has now stretched across the Eastern Caribbean with the latest decree.

The President also said that he told the Secretary General that the Good Officers Process which Guyana and Venezuela had started a few years back has been exhausted.

“We have informed him that the process is more and less exhausted and he has indicated his willingness to appoint a mission to come to Guyana and we have told him that the situation now is that the dispute has gone beyond Guyana/Venezuela and it has now contaminated relations with the entire Eastern Caribbean. It is becoming regionalise”, Mr. Granger told News Source.

The President noted that he also explained to UN Secretary General that rather than improving the security situation in the Eastern Caribbean, the situation is deteriorating. Granger said he expects the UN Secretary General to play an important role in helping to reduce the “level of tension and to support Guyana in having that obnoxious decree withdrawn”.

Guyana has been lobbying regional and international organisations for support since the decree was announced back in May, 2015 by the Venezuelan President, Nicolas Maduro.

Mr. Maduro was expected to attend the CARICOM Meeting and hold talks with the Guyana President and CARICOM officials. He has since cancelled his attendance but has dispatched his first Vice President instead.

President Granger has indicated that he is also willing to meet with the Vice President to make it clear to him also that the decree must be withdrawn.
