The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon, has announced that he will be offering an assessment of the Guyana/Venezuela border row before he leaves office.

The Secretary General leaves office in December. He said his assessment will likely be offered in November.

President David Granger met with the UN Secretary General on Saaturday at the United Nations.

The President has accepted the timetable and has committed to providing any additional information, which Mr. Ban Ki-moon may need in order to complete that assessment.

“We have been very impressed with the seriousness with which you have approached the problem and your own sincerity… We have been personally convinced that you want to bring closure to this matter,” the President said.

Guyana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Carl Greenidge and former Commonwealth Secretary General, Guyanese, Sir Shridath Ramphal, also attended the meeting with other officials of the Guyana Foreign Ministry.

Guyana has been pressing the United Nations to recommend a judicial settlement to the decades old border controversy.
