UN Secretary-General urges announcement of final elections results as soon as possible

The Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres in a statement this afternoon has issued a call for an announcement of the final results of the Guyana Elections as soon as possible.

Mr. Gueterres noted that he has taken note of the Caribbean Court of Justice’s ruling in the recent election case and believes there is the need to end the impasse that has lasted more than four months.

The Secretary-General called on all political leaders and their supporters to recognize and accept the final official results and refrain from any act or statement that may fuel tensions or incite violence.

The statement came as the Guyana Elections Commission was locked in a meeting following the Chairman’s request for the Chief Election Officer to prepare and submit a final report and the CEO’s response seeking clarification on a number of issues.
